About Us

Troop 5 is sponsored by University Park United Methodist Church, and has been since 1950. Troop 5 was first chartered in September of 1910, and was originally sponsored by "A Group of Citizens" (many of whom were professors and staff at D.U. who had sons in the troop). Troop 5 continues to use the D.U. colors (crimson and gold) and the D.U. logo (covered wagon) and name ("Pioneers") on its neckerchief, stationery and banners. University Park United Methodist Church is located directly across the street from the troop's original meeting site, Old Main on the D.U. campus.

The Troop is self-supporting and self-governed. Troop Meetings are held every Tuesday in the West Fellowship Hall of University Park United Methodist Church, from 7:00-8:30 PM. Commitee (parent) meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month.

Troop 5 seeks to enable Scouts to make ethical choices over their lifetime, by instilling values from the Scout Law & Oath in them during fun experiences. Specifically, We focus on Citizenship, Service and Leadership.  Weekly meetings are a pillar of the troop.  Our meetings are designed for scouts age 11-15, and focus on advancement through the program and the development of Scout skills. We strongly emphasize community service; in addition to being a requirement for advancement, is crucial to giving back to our community. The troop has high expectations for all members, and at minimum all members are expected to attend weekly meetings on time and in uniform.

As Troop 5 is a self-funded troop, all members are required to pay dues (registration fees) and to participate in fundraising throughout the year.  Some money from fundraising will go to a special account for each scout, helping offset the expenses of summer camp and monthly activities.  We mainly do two types of fundraising; Selling Popcorn and selling Scout Show tickets.
